Hospitalist Medicine

Hospitalist Medicine
Hospital medicine is a type of practice within internal medicine in which the clinical focus is
caring for hospitalized patients. Internal medicine physicians practicing hospital medicine are
frequently called “hospitalists.” Compared to other specializations, hospital medicine—the
practice of medicine specifically in a hospital—is relatively new and was coined in 1996.
The need for such a specialty emerged from cases that required physicians to dedicate their time
to hospital patients without other obligations. Hospitalists serve patients in a wide variety of
ways, from the emergency room to critical care to post-operative or post-acute care. Hospitalists
may also perform diagnostic exams, procedures, or tests. Hospitalist medicine focuses on
providing care for patients in hospitals with compassion and empathy. We employ advanced
practice providers who work with other specialists to manage a wide range of medical needs.
These include addressing patients with complex and serious conditions and providing
streamlined services between patients, their families, and the rest of the care team.
